Werewolves have always been in the limelight and there are several characters in books, movies and television serials based on werewolves. Werewolves have always been part of European folklore. Most of these stories involved men transforming into wolf like creatures, generally during a full moon night. The word “werewolf” is in fact a fusion of “wer”, meaning “a man” in Old English and “wolf”. There is no particular evidence to show since when the myth of werewolves started but there have been references made to the metamorphosis of man into wolf in documents as old as the first century.
Werewolves have now acquired iconic status owing to their portrayal by famous Hollywood stars such as Jack Nicholson, Michael J. Fox and Michael Landon. While werewolves as such are depicted as ruthless and blood thirsty, there have been movies and books that have displayed the mixed emotions of a werewolf and have portrayed them as humans who just have had the opportunity to display their inherent animal traits. For instance, Harry Potter, the famous series by J.K.Rowling has a werewolf named Remus Lupin who sticks to the good side and also an evil werewolf named Fenrir Greyback. So not all werewolves are bad!
